Why Most Protein Powders Disappoint
There are thousands of protein powders on Amazon. The majority have at least one of these problems:
- Underdosed — 15g of protein per serving sounds fine until you realize you need 30-40g post-workout
- Artificial sweeteners that cause GI issues — sucralose and acesulfame potassium are common and some women find them bloating
- Proprietary blends that hide underdosing — if the label says "protein blend" without breaking down the individual amounts, be skeptical
- Taste that requires mental effort to choke down — if you don't enjoy it, you won't be consistent
- Expensive for what you get — cost per gram of protein varies wildly
The math that matters: divide the price by the number of grams of protein in the whole container. This gives you cost per gram of protein — the real measure of value in a protein powder.
What I Look For
- 25-30g protein per serving — a meaningful dose, not a token amount
- Clean sweetener choice — stevia or monk fruit over sucralose where possible
- Short ingredient list — fewer fillers, more of what you're actually paying for
- Third-party tested — NSF Certified or Informed Sport gives confidence the label is accurate
- Mixes well without a blender — because I'm not always near a blender when I need protein
- Tastes good in water — not just hidden in a smoothie with five other ingredients
Whey vs Plant-Based — Which Is Better for Women?
Both can work. Whey protein (from dairy) has a complete amino acid profile and is highly bioavailable — meaning your body absorbs and uses it efficiently. Plant-based protein (typically pea + rice protein blend) is a great option for women who are dairy-free, vegan, or find whey causes digestive discomfort.
I've used both at different times and have picks on my Amazon list for each. Click below to see the current options.
